Søre Folgefonna is Norway’s third largest glacier, appearing as a dazzlingly white blanket of snow and ice over the Folgefonna peninsula. On this trip you’ll experience a wild fjord landscape, impressive blue glacial ice with large crevasses, and expansive plateaus of snow and ice. We’ll be spending the night at the charming Fonnabu cabin, situated high over both fjord and fell. Wild Voss and BSI Friluft invite you to an adventurous autumn trip in majestic surroundings.

################################################

*Route Description:*

The trip begins in Buerdalen just outside of Odda. We’ll follow the path steeply up towards Reinanuten (1296mosl), which is situated right at the edge of the glacier. On the way we’ll be afforded impressive views of the wild glacial arms in the upper part of Buerbreen. At the edge of the glacier, we’ll don our glacier equipment and connect ourselves by rope. We expect to have to deal with cracked and fragmented blue ice in the early stages. The glacial plateau will then gradually open up ahead of us, until we find ourselves at the glacier’s highest point, 1660 metres over the fjord below. As evening approaches, we’ll be arriving at Fonnabu cabin, where we’ll eat dinner together and relax after a long day.

On Sunday, the route takes us over the glacier to Holmaskjer. From there we’ll tackle the long descent down to the fjord. Along the way, the desolate high-mountain landscape will gradually give way to autumnally coloured birch forest on steep luscious slopes leading us down towards Sørfjorden.

################################################

*Requirements For Participants:*

This is a demanding trip in the high mountains. The route involves steep ascents, uneven terrain, and challenging glacier wandering. The time of year dictates that we must expect cold weather with the possibility for snow, sleet, and wind. The route on Saturday involves 1400 metres of climbing over a distance of 14 kilometres. This gives a day’s hiking of 10 hours.

To participate on this trip, you must be in good shape and be used to hiking with a rucksack in demanding terrain. You don’t need to have been on a glacier before, but it is an advantage. You have to be able to enjoy yourself even when you’re wet and tired and the weather is bad.

*Gradering: 3 støvler*

Søre Folgefonna er Norges tredje største bre, og danner et kritthvitt lokk av snø og is over fjellene på Folgefonnhalvøya. Ingen andre breer ligger nærmer Bergen enn Folgefonna.

ligger like ved brekanten.

Søndag går turen over breen til Holmaskjer.
