The Network Dynamics Lab at McGill University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow to lead a study developing novel methods for analyzing the impact of sponsorship on scientific research, as part of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research-funded project, “Automating Scientific Transparency: Using Machine Learning to Build a Comprehensive Database of Disclosure Information.”

This role offers excellent opportunities for research, development, and publication. We are looking for individuals who are able to independently lead a project developing machine learning and natural language processing methods for extracting information on the sponsorship of scientific research. The scope of the study includes devising the novel machinery for extracting sponsorship patterns, and conducting analyses that use inferred patterns to understand the influence of sponsorship on research and publication activities.

Working under the supervision of Dr. Derek Ruths (McGill School of Computer Science) and Dr. Nicholas King (McGill Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ethics and Policy), the fellow will lead a project to automatically extract metadata and disclosure information from scientific articles, and develop natural language processing algorithms to extract and verify information about relationships between authors and sponsors. The Network Dynamics Lab conducts high impact research aimed to advance the responsible use of data science. This position is an opportunity to join a vibrant interdisciplinary research team working at the forefront of applied AI and data science. Applicants should have a familiarity with working with large, unstructured textual datasets and experience with natural language processing. Experience with entity linking, entity relation extraction, and data analysis in Python are pluses. Applicants with backgrounds in computer science, data science, sociology, ethics, and any other related fields are welcome

The project is based in Montreal but remote work may be possible. We welcome and encourage applications from racialized persons/visible minorities, women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and LGBTT2SQ* persons, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities. Applicants should have at the time of award completed a PhD in a relevant discipline including, but not restricted to, computer science, sociology, political science, or a related field.

Applications should be written in English, and include a cover letter describing the candidate’s background, qualifications, and research interests; a complete Curriculum Vitae; and the names of three referees. Applications should be sent to Nicholas B. King at nicholas.king at mcgill.ca. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
