The Icar lab at the ENS de Lyon invites applications for a fully-funded position as a PhD student on computational approaches to language variation and change.

The detailed offer is available here: https://emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/Doctorant/UMR5191-MAXPEN-004/Default.aspx?lang=EN

The deadline for the applications is 24th June 2021.

Description of the thesis topic Change and variation are fundamental properties of language. While it is recognized that the structures of populations and social interactions influence these properties, we are far from understanding the full complexity of this phenomenon and its dynamics. How are linguistic conventions constructed from inter-individual interactions? How do these conventions in turn influence speakers? Socio-Digital platforms provide both linguistic and social data that allow us to propose new approaches to these questions.

The proposed thesis project focuses on the emergence of the textual genre "Wikipedia article". The candidate will characterize this genre and, based on the history of the articles in the online encyclopedia, will analyze the way it has gradually been constructed over time. The emphasis will be on the role of inter-individual interactions: by reconstructing a network of contributors' interactions and analyzing their linguistic trajectory based on their individual contributions, the candidate will determine the conditions of diffusion of consensus in the population.
