Applications are invited for a two-year Research Associate position in the University of Cambridge, working with Prof. Nigel Collier (PI) on the EPI-AI project. The project is funded by a newly awarded grant from the UK's ESRC (ESRC) under the Canada-UK Artificial Intelligence Initiative. EPI-AI aims to develop high impact Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques for real-time digital disease surveillance from online news streams.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include but are not limited to research in innovative machine learning methods that address the challenges of text mining (e.g. entity recognition/linking, question answering) in the global public health domain.
The position will involve close collaboration with colleagues at McGill University in Canada and end-user partners such as Public Health England and the World Health Organisation. The project will take place at the Language Technology Lab (http://ltl.mml.cam.ac.uk/) and within the larger community of NLP researchers at the University of Cambridge. This arrangement provides an excellent environment for research and career development, as the post holder will benefit from the expertise of both NLP and domain partners in this multidisciplinary project.
Candidates will have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field such as NLP, Information Retrieval, Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning and be able to demonstrate a strong track record of both independent and team research as well as strong software engineering skills. Essential skills include: excellent programming (Python, LAMP), NLP techniques, machine Learning, as well as proven communication skills. Prior experience with deep neural network architectures is essential. Familiarity with data annotation will be an advantage.
