This Friday 11 December 2020, 13.30-15.30 GMT we are organising an online colloquium on Narrative Framing and its Linguistic Forms in Online Media hosted by the Communication in Multicultural Society Conference CMSC 2020

Overview:

Framing refers to selecting and emphasizing certain aspects of a subject in communicating text in order to induce a cognitive bias. Framing is an important part of what determines how various issues are perceived by the public.

The colloquium will discuss different types of narrative framing used in online media and their intended effect (e.g. propaganda, political frames, scientific frames, journalistic frames), the linguistic means used to convey these (e.g. metaphor, simile, emotive language) and how these could be automatically detected and addressed. The format of the colloquium will be that of a panel discussion where speakers from different disciplines will present their own perspectives on framing in online media and answer questions.

Invited panelists:

• Philip Resnik (University of Maryland) • Preslav Nakov (Qatar Computing Research Institute) • Kristen-Marie Johnson (Purdue University) • Katarzyna Molek-Kozakowska (University of Opole) • Dietram A. Scheufele (University of Wisconsin) • Thomas E Nelson (Ohio State University)
