The Leibniz-ScienceCampus "Empirical Linguistics and Computational Language Modeling", jointly run by the Institute for the German Language (Institut für Deutsche Sprache, IDS, Mannheim) and the Institute for Computational Linguistics (ICL, Heidelberg University) advertises a

post-doctoral position (100%, reference number 6/2018)

for one year, starting 1. September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary is based on Germany's academic salary level TV-L 13 or TV-L 14, depending on experience. The position runs for one year.

The Leibniz-ScienceCampus conducts innovative research to support the high-quality automatic annotation of large-scale corpus resources for the German language through induction of domain-, genre- and variety-adaptive natural language processing models, to enable advanced empirical research in linguistics as well as innovative applications in the humanities and the social sciences.

Research themes and methods of interest for the advertised research area include

* Opinion mining and sentiment analysis (preferrably with a focus on German) * Framing in news or social media * Hate Speech Detection * Development of scalable annotation methods, for example via active learning, crowdsourcing, or annotation games * (Semi-)automatic error analysis of human annotation

We are looking for an experienced researcher, preferably with at least two years of work experience at the post-doctoral level in the areas of corpus linguistics, natural language processing and/or Digital Humanities. Outstanding researchers shortly after a Ph.D. in the named area are also welcome to apply.


* Development of the scientific profile and of scientific achievements of the research project, especially by contributing excellent publications * Co-advising of doctoral candidates, Masters- and Bachelortheses * Responsible participation in administering the ScienceCampus * Teaching activity in ICL's computational linguistics study program (2 SWS, i.e. 2 weekly hours per semester)


Besides a successfully completed Ph.D. in computational linguistics or a related field, the following qualifications are required:

* Excellent publications with international visibility * Outstanding qualifications in one or more of the following areas:

- Statistics-based computational linguistics and Machine Learning

- Corpus-linguistic procedures and text-technological modeling of linguistic data * Good programming skills * Ability to work in a team, outstanding commitment, openness, flexibility, experience in coordinating research groups very welcome * Good knowledge of the German language and excellent knowledge of the English language
