*Two PhD Positions in Statistical and Neural Machine Translation*
The School of Business and Engineering Vaud (www.heig-vd.ch) offers bachelor and master programs in engineering and management as well as post-graduate programs. With over 2,000 students, it is the largest school in the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (www.hes-so.ch). HEIG-VD conducts applied research and development activities through its 13 institutes.
As a member of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (heig-vd.ch/tic) and of its Institute for ICT (iict.heig-vd.ch), your objectives will be the following ones:
Participate in a Swiss National Science Foundation project on heterogeneous knowledge integration within statistical and neural machine translation systems.
Carry out research towards a PhD degree, to improve and unify models of document-level dependencies, in order to demonstrate a cumulative improvement of translation quality. One of the two PhD theses will focus on designing neural models of discourse-level dependencies, while the other one will design and compare methods for leveraging and combining such models on demand in neural vs. statistical MT systems.
The PhD students will be registered in one of the doctoral schools of a partner university (e.g., EPFL or Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, or Zurich).
Masters degree or equivalent in computer science, statistical methods, or natural language processing
Previous experience with NLP, machine translation, machine learning, deep neural networks
Strong programming skills (e.g. in Python or C++)
Strong academic record and a clear aptitude for research
Autonomy, creativity, good capacities for analysis and organization of work
Good command of English and good writing skills
