Dear all,

please see information on two positions at the University of Birmingham. The posts are part of a wider initiative by the University to promote research excellence. Linguistics - in particular corpus linguistics - is a key research priority of the university.

1) Professorial Research Fellow in Corpus Linguistics

The Professorial Fellow will be based in the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics, which houses the Centre for Corpus Research. The department has particular expertise in Cognitive Linguistics, Stylistics, Discourse Analysis, New Media and English Language Teaching, many of these areas linked to corpus-based research methods. In appointing a Professorial Fellow we seek particularly to expand and develop our expertise in corpus statistics and to permit explorations of innovative quantitative approaches to corpora. As well as excellence in research we look for leadership for colleagues and a substantial cohort of Doctoral Researchers in developing new projects and underpinning current research priorities. The Centre for Corpus Research provides access to a range of corpora and has a dedicated computer suite with specialist resources as well as an eye-tracking laboratory.

In the first three years the Professorial Research Fellow in Corpus Linguistics will be expected to develop an internationally excellent research programme, and will have dedicated protected research time in that period. Subsequently they will move to a Chair position within the University of Birmingham at which point they will be expected to take on wider responsibilities relating to learning and teaching and management and administration within the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics.

Further information about the professorial post can be found here:

2) Birmingham Fellow in Languages and Linguistics

The University of Birmingham is home to language-led research in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese and BSL. We have an established reputation in corpus-based modes of enquiry and in developing theoretical insights into language based on those modes. Along with Corpus Linguistics we have world-leading expertise in Stylistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, New Media and Translation Studies. We seek to extend this range by offering a fellowship in any aspect of languages and linguistics that will complement our current expertise. Preference will be given to early career researchers able to demonstrate excellence and innovation in research, working in one or more of these languages.

At the start of a Fellowship, the Birmingham Fellow in Languages and Linguistics will focus on consolidating an outstanding research trajectory. However, because the University of Birmingham is committed to excellence in Education, Fellows will also contribute to learning and teaching.
