11th Annual Sinclair Lecture, 20th June 2016

You are invited to join us for the 11th Sinclair Open Lecture at the University of Birmingham

John Sinclair was one of the pioneers of corpus linguistics – a discipline that has radically changed theories about language and approaches to the study language. The annual Sinclair Open Lecture honours the memory of Professor John Sinclair, who held the Chair of Modern English Language at The University of Birmingham from 1965 to 2000 and who was an internationally-renowned figure of influence in the world of Linguistics. The lecture is sponsored by the Education Development Trust, an education charity that John Sinclair actively supported throughout his lifetime.

This year's Sinclair lecture, with the title - Corpus linguistics and the challenges of close and distant reading - will be delivered by Professor Michaela Mahlberg, who joined the University of Birmingham in September last year as Chair in Corpus Linguistics and Director of the Centre for Corpus Research.

The lecture will be introduced by Matthew Hilton, Professor of Social History and Deputy Head of College of Arts and Law.

The event is free, to register please email Lucia Puricelli: L.E.Puricelli at bham.ac.uk<mailto:L.E.Puricelli at bham.ac.uk>
