Description:

Language offers a multitude of options for modulating the encoding of messages - from the duration of syllables to the choice of words and structuring of syntactic elements, to arranging linguistic elements in discourse. While there is ample evidence that choice of a particular encoding is determined by context (ambient context, communicative context as well as situational context), modeling this context-encoding relation is not a trivial task. In this working group, we start from the assumption that language approximates an optimal code for human communication by making available the linguistic means for adapting language use to context. In this view, encoding variation serves to optimize communication. Building upon Shannon's notion of information, notions such as information density, entropy and surprisal have been successfully applied to modeling linguistic processes (human language understanding and production, computational language processing, language change/evolution) across various linguistic units (sounds, words, sentences, texts). We invite contributions that exploit information-theoretically inspired models of linguistic processes with special regard to the relation of linguistic variation and context at all levels of linguistic organization (phonetics, lexis, syntax, semantics, discourse) as well as their interaction. The working group is organized by members of SFB 1102 "Information Density and Linguistic Encoding" (www.sfb1102.uni-saarland.de) as a sequel to 'AG 11: Information Density and Linguistic Variation' at DGfS 2012 (Frankfurt).
