The MSc in Language and Computation is offered by the Institute of Linguistics, University of Malta, in collaboration with the Department of Intelligent Computer Systems and the Department of Systems and Control Engineering.
The MSc programme takes place over 3 semesters, and involves a combination of taught and supervised research components. All tuition and supervision is carried out in English. The course is open to students from a variety of backgrounds, including Linguistics, Computing and Engineering, who seek to further their studies in Natural Language Processing technology.
These are some of the highlights of the programme: - Students benefit from the possibility of building a tailored foundational programme to ensure that they have a solid background in computing, linguistics, and applications of ICT to the development of intelligent systems that communicate using language; - The MSc also offers modules in cutting-edge research topics in NLP, including automatic analysis of language in Social Media, and embodied agents, including software agents and robots. - MSc dissertation projects are supervised by experts in a broad variety of research areas, including: Natural Language Generation; robotics and embodied agents; social media analytics; distributional semantics; computational morphology and syntax; and multilingual NLP approaches.
Students who follow courses within the Institute of Linguistics benefit from tuition in small groups and regular one-to-one sessions with their academic mentors. The MSc also offers a lively environment with students from diverse backgrounds and nationalities.
