Two-year MA in Linguistics and its Applications for a Multilingual Society - Universities of Louvain and Oslo

The Master's Programme in Linguistics and its Applications for a Multilingual Society is a two-year programme offering a double degree at the University of Louvain (UCL) and the University of Oslo. The programme welcomes European and non-European applicants who are interested in applied perspectives on linguistics and multilingualism. Students spend one year at each university, and apply to the university where they wish to spend the first year of the degree programme.

Initiated by two universities with a strong corpus linguistic tradition, the programme has a significant focus on corpus-based approaches to language and offers specialization in Contrastive linguistics and translation studies, Second language acquisition and language teaching, and Language and society. In addition it provides a combination of core courses in various domains of linguistics and an internship in a private or public company, research centre or laboratory where students will be involved in a project with a significant linguistic component. Students get to study under internationally renowned specialists who do research into how authentic language is used in present-day society, how languages differ and how (well) languages are learnt.

Admission to the programme requires a bachelor's degree in modern languages/linguistics comprising at least 80 ECTS credits in English, French or German, including linguistics courses at an advanced level. Applicants should be able to document proficiency in English at a minimum level of B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), either through a BA with English major or an internationally recognized language test. Students intending to take courses in French or German should have language skills in French or German comparable to B2 level. English is the main language of instruction, but the multilingual component includes a possibility for linguistics courses in French, German and Dutch (in Louvain) or Norwegian (in Oslo).

The MA in Linguistics and its Applications for a Multilingual Society may qualify for language-related work in e.g. communication, publishing, lexicography, ICT and teaching (the MA does not provide pedagogical qualifications, however). It may also lead to further graduate work in contrastive and foreign/second language studies.

For further information, see http://www.uclouvain.be/en-dd-ling.html (Louvain) and http://www.uio.no/english/studies/programmes/linguistics-multilingual/ (Oslo).

Application deadlines: - Louvain: 30 May for EU applicants; 30 April for non-EU applicants; - Oslo: 1 March for European applicants; 1 March/15 April for Nordic applicants (see the websites for details).
