The Linguistic Cognition Laboratory at the Illinois Institute of Technology has an opening for a postdoctoral position (full-time) in computational linguistics for research on computational analysis of discourse structure and metaphor and their relationship to cognitive style and ideology. The ideal candidate will have expertise in several of the following areas: natural language processing, semantic text analysis, computational stylistics, discourse analysis, statistical parsing, social network analysis, and machine learning.
The goal of this federally-funded project is to develop methods to reliably profile the cognitive and ideological preferences and styles of a writer, based primarily on automated analysis of the writer’s texts. The research will involve work with faculty members from a variety of disciplines, including computer science, machine learning, linguistics, and psychology; we particularly are interested in candidates who can successfully bridge multiple of these disciplines.
Candidates should have a PhD in computer science, computational linguistics, cognitive science, or a related discipline; the position is open only to US citizens. The position will start September 1, 2013 or when it is filled, pending finalization of contracts. The term of the position will be for 12 months, potentially renewable to a total of 36 months depending on performance and continued funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience and expertise, in accord with accepted standards.
Promising candidates should contact Shlomo Argamon (argamon at iit.edu) directly with a (PDF) CV, an informal statement of interest, and the names of three referees, to start the process. Start dates for these positions are flexible, but depend in part on the funder’s schedule.
