Bikepacking around Bjørnafjorden

Date: 25-26 May

Difficulty: 🚴‍♀️🚴🚴‍♂️

Requirements: Some experience with longer bike tours (not necessarily bike packing)

Spots: 8

Trip leader: Luca

Time to brush off the dust from your bikes, stash those skis away, and embark on a bikepacking adventure along the Norwegian fjords!

Quick Facts:

The pace will be adjusted such that everyone can keep up and we will keep together. It is supposed to be a fun ride, not a race.

Route (elevation gain is a bit inaccurate due to tunnels):

* Saturday: 80 km (113 km without bus) -> https://www.strava.com/routes/3215080078361804256

* Sunday: 42 km -> https://www.strava.com/routes/3215084466014393696

Cost:

* Food & Drinks

* Bus to Hatvik is 48 kr (student + bike) or 66 kr (adult + bike)

* The ferries are free! (Hatvik-Venjaneset & Våge-Halhjem)

Saturday:

We are meeting up next to AdO at 8:15 sharp, aiming to hop on the Hatvik ferry at 10:00 (No rush though it runs every 40 minutes)

Now, riding 113 km ain’t no picnic, so be aware you can take the bus (600 Osøyro -> 740 Gjermundshamn) all the way to the ferry and join us there at 10:00 for the remaining 80 km. If you live south from the city center you can of course join us on the way.

After taking the ferry for 13 minutes, we start our trip around Bjørnafjorden. About halfway, we’ll recharge at Joker Revnestranden with boller and brus or whatever floats your boat :)

Then, it’s through a few tunnels (Stussvikhovdatunnelen is 1217 m long!) so it is absolutely necessary that everyone has a light front and back.

Our final goal for the day is Kjevika on Tysnesøya https://www.visitnorway.de/listings/kjevika/266878/. If, for some reason, it doesn’t work out, we can always improvise and scout for other spots on the fly or do some more research on Google Street View beforehand ;)

After a demanding day on the bike, we’ll pitch our tents/hammocks, take a refreshing dip in the sea and enjoy our dinner which we’ll buy on the way.

Sunday:

Post a solid snooze, we’ll fuel up with breakfast and begin packing our gear. Then comes the easy part: riding 7 km to Våge followed by the Våge-Halhjem ferry which takes 35 minutes. From there it is only 35 km to Bergen. In case anyone needs it, there is a bus option from Halhjem back to Bergen. Depending on how everyone's feeling, we can also extend the ride a bit, perhaps exploring around Tysnesøya, adding up to 40 km extra if the group is up for it.

There will be a mandatory planning meeting (ferdaråd) at 17:00 on Wednesday 22. May by the cafe in the first floor of Realfagbygget.

Mandatory equipment:

* Bike: Preferably a road bike, but a gravel bike is fine too. Mountainbike is not recommended, as we will stay on paved roads.

* Bags: I strongly recommend bags that can be attached to the bike, but a backpack works too.

* Preferably 2 water bottles (750 ml each), but we can refill on the way at the ferry/gas stations/supermarkets)

* Nutrition: Energy/muslibars, bananas etc. No need to pack too much though, as we will buy stuff on the way.

* Proper cycling clothing (might need a long sleeve/long tights/gloves and a rain jacket, since it can still be quite cold in May)

* Regular clothing for after the ride

* Tent + sleeping mat or hammock (tarp if it’s rainy)

* Sleeping bag

* Helmet

* Cycling/sunglasses

* Front and back light

* At least one spare inner tube (If everyone sticks to this we should be on the safe side)

Optional equipment:

* Multi tool/pump/puncture repair kit (Not everyone needs these. We will plan this in the meeting)

* Gas cooker equipment (Depends on dinner plans. Will be discussed in the meeting)

* Towel

* Slippers (cycling shoes are not super comfortable to walk in)

* Head torch (sunset will be at 22:37 🤷🏻‍♂️)

When packing your gear, keep it light!

I had a lot of fun planning this! Looking forward to a sunny weekend with fun people 😎
