Intro to Fjellski: 12th - 14th January

Now that the winter semester has started it is time for one of BSI Friluft’s most important activities: introduction to fjellski.

Now, what is fjellski? Fjellski, mountain skiing, and backcountry skiing are all different names for the same thing. Fjellski is winter’s answer to hiking trips in the summer. It is about going for long (or not so long) trips in the mountains, often from cabin to cabin, or carrying a tent. There are almost no prepared tracks in the Norwegian high mountains so you go skiing in untouched snow and plough your own tracks. The terrain is also hilly so there is a lot of variation between going flat and going up and skiing down. The fjellski skis are wider than cross-country skis, but thinner than alpine skis. The heel is always loose on fjellskis.

Fjellski is not to be confused with randonee skiing. Randonee skis are similar to alpine skis in many respects, but you can loosen the heel when going up and fasten it again to go down.

BSI friluft's skiing trips are almost exclusively fjellski or randonee, with most of them being fjellski trips. BSI friluft also has a large selection of fjellskis for rental for when you want to join a trip or just to go on your own.

This trip is for you if you want to join any of BSI's upcoming skiing trips this semester, but have never done any skiing before or only have experience alpine skiing. If you have experience cross-country skiing you probably don't need this introduction, but you are welcome to join if you are unsure and want to learn more about fjellski.

We will take the train to Finse on Friday afternoon. There we will try on our skis and ski the very short distance (700m) to the cabin. Through the evening we will get to know each other a bit, make and eat dinner, have some theory, and maybe go out and try our skis some more. On Saturday we will make and eat breakfast, go out on a suitable trip during the day before we go back to eat dinner and have some more theory and a cosy cabin evening. On Sunday we will also try to go on a suitable trip before taking the train back to Bergen.

We are planning on taking the 15:41 train from Bergen to Finse on Friday and the 16:35 train back on Sunday.

We will send a complete packing list to those who are accepted to the trip.

Costs:

- Train is about 400 - 500kr each way

- Cabin is 300kr

- Food is probably around ~200kr

- Skirental is 200kr

In total around 1500kr

There will be a mandatory trip meeting at 17:15 in the cafeteria on the first floor of Realfagsbygget (the natural sciences building) on Wednesday 10th January.
