6 Stages of Massiv: 1st - 6th April 2023

Description:
This is a 6-day ski adventure through the entirety of Skarvheimen national park, beginning at Tyinstølen and finishing at Finse, completing 6 of the 16 stages of the DNT Massiv route. The route is 114km in total, with daily stages ranging from 7km to 29km, although we have the freedom to alter the distance we cover each day. The terrain is rolling, with regular ascents and descents, which each day amount to several hundred metres of climbing. We’ll be following the marked winter route and sleeping in tents. The full route is summarised below:
Saturday 1st April: Tyinstřlen - Sletningsbu (7km)
Sunday 2nd April: Sletningsbu - Sulebu (17 km)
Monday 3rd April: Sulebu – Bjordalsbu (29 km)
Tuesday 4th April: Bjordalsbu – Iungdalshytta (16 km)
Wednesday 5th April: Iungsdalshytta – Geiterygghytta (27 km)
Thursday 6th April: Geiterygghytta – Finse (18 km)
Total: 114km
Prior experience of ski trips in high mountain terrain is a requirement to join this trip. You must also be in good enough physical shape to cover the required distances over many consecutive days. Technical competency on fjellski in relatively steep terrain is also necessary. Experience of sleeping in tents during winter and pulling a pulk are also an advantage. It’s possible that weather conditions may prevent us from making progress on one or more days, so it’s an advantage if you’re not completely dependent on being back in Bergen on Thursday evening.
This trip will be physically and technically challenging, likely uncomfortable at times, and certainly very very exciting. We can’t wait!!!

Food:
We’ll take some food and buy the rest from DNT cabins along the way.

Transport:
Outward transport on 1st April: bus from Bergen to Tyinkrysset at 09:15, arriving at 13:21.
Return transport on 6th April: train from Finse to Bergen at 18:56, arriving at 21:33.

Equipment:
You will need to bring the following kit:
Nordic backcountry skis (fjellski), boots, poles, and skins (long and short) – can be rented from BSI.
Winter sleeping bag – can be rented from BSI.
Sleeping mat – can be rented from BSI.
Snow shovel – can be rented from BSI.
Ski goggles.
Sun cream.
Head torch – can be rented from BSI.
Drinking bottle(s) / Thermos
Toiletries.
Woolen thermal underwear (and spares), woolen socks (and spares), hat, mittens/gloves.
Waterproof and windproof outer layer.
1 or 2 additional warm layers (e.g. woolen jumper or down jacket).
Between us we’ll take the following communal equipment. You don’t need to acquire this equipment yourself.

Tent
Stove, fuel, and cooking pots
3 emergency shelters
1 first aid kit
2 maps, 2 compasses, & 2 map cases
2 GPS

Trip Meeting:
The compulsory trip meeting will be held on Wednesday 22nd March at 18:00 at Realfagbygget (Allégaten 41, 5007 Bergen). It is essential that you attend this meeting.
