Fjellski Trip from Finse to Hallingskeid: 7th – 8th May

####################################################

Difficulty: 2 out of 4

Trip Leaders: Andrew and Ruben

Description:

This weekend we will ski with mountain cross-country skis (fjellski) from Finse to Hallingskeid via Ramnabergvatnet, sleeping in either tents or a snow cave on Saturday night.

On Saturday we will follow the marked winter from Finse, around the northwest of Hardangerjøkulen to Ramnabergvatnet, where we will find a suitable spot to spend the night, hopefully nearby the spectacular angular iceberg which broke off from the glacier in the second half of last year. The route on Saturday will be roughly 9km, with roughly 200 metres of climbing.

On Sunday we can choose to follow the summer route most of the way from Ramnabergvatnet to Hallingskeid, or alternatively we can choose to take a more direct and hilly route if we feel our legs itching for a climb and our eyes itching for a view. Either way, it will be about 17km, plus some climbing; the amount of which being dependent on choice of route.

We will take the 08:15 train from Bergen to Finse on Saturday, and take the 16:46 train from Hallingskeid to Bergen on Sunday, arriving back in Bergen at 19:27.

This trip crosses easy terrain and there are no steep or technical sections. It is an ideal trip for anyone who has used fjellski or randonee skis before, doesn’t mind (and maybe even gets excited about) sleeping outside in winter, and is comfortable covering 17km with a rucksack.
