Introtur topptur – weekend trip Friday 01st to Sunday 03rd of February

Difficulty: 2 out of 4

Tour leaders: Timo Käfer, Søren Bering

Description:

Have you ever dreamed of endless powder snow and cutting fresh lines in untouched terrain? Do you have some experience with cross country or alpine skiing but never tried randonee? Hopefully this trip will be the perfect place to start!

This is a randonee / topptur basics weekend where we will be focusing on all the essentials of backcountry skiing. The goal is for you to get familiar with the equipment, basic avalanche assessment and rescue, clothing etc.

We will go at a slow pace, so everybody feels comfortable and the plan is to do 2 fairly easy trips. We will have some training in the use of the avalanche equipment.

On Friday night, we drive to Målsethytta at Vikafjellet and get settled in the DNT cabin there. The car drive is 2.5 hours. The way from the road to the cabin is approximately 1.1 km long and we have to use the skis for that. We also have to use head lamps since it will be dark. Once we have arrived at the cabin, we prepare common dinner and if time allows, we get started with some theory about using the safety equipment.

On Saturday, we do an easy trip and some practical avalanche training close to the cabin. In the evening, we will have another common dinner and have a good time in the cabin.

On Sunday, we do another trip, somewhere between Vikafjellet and Bergen.

We plan to be back in Bergen on Sunday evening, approximately 18:00.

We don’t expect you to be an expert in handling the deep snow, however you need to be in decent shape, and it shouldn’t be your first time wearing skis.

We look forward to sharing our passion and hopefully getting 2 beautiful days in the mountains.

Søren & Timo

(The Danish/German dynamic duo)

Ferdaråd (compulsary trip meeting):

It is mandatory (!) to participate in the trip meeting on Wednesday 30th of January at 16:00 in Student centre. Not showing up results in losing the place to the first on the waiting list.

Equipment:

You need the following equipment to participate:

* Topptur skis (Randone, telemark), boots, poles and skins – can be rented from BSI. However, we only have a limited number of pairs so if you can borrow somewhere else, that’s good. * Avalanche equipment: beacon, probe, shovel – can be rented from BSI. However, we only have a limited number of pairs so if you can borrow somewhere else, that’s good. * Goggles, water/wind proof clothes, hat and mittens * Head lamp
