PhD Studentship:Web scale information extraction using linked open data
Start date of the studentship: October 2012 or immediately thereafter
Length: three years, subject to satisfactory progress
More details: The studentship provides payment of tuitionfees at the UK/EU rate and a stipend (13,650 GBP per year)

DETAILS
This studentship is an opportunity to work in a vibrant research area and carry out research on a topic with important applications. The studentship will focus on devising algorithms for Web scale information extraction. Linked Open Data will be used to seed learning. The studentship is associated with the project Lodie, an EPSRC funded project on the same topic. The project covers 2 senior research associates over 3 years. It also involves short collaborations with Yahoo! Research Barcelona (Spain) and the University of Linkoeping (Sweden).
The student will become a member of Sheffield University's OAK group (http://oak.dcs.shef.ac.uk/) and will be supervised by Prof. Fabio Ciravegna (http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/%7Efabio).
The studentship is funded by the Department of Computer Science and will cover fees and living expenses.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Candidates should hold at a first class honour degree or masters degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. The candidate should have excellent computer programming skills (including Java); analytic, presentational, communication and effective interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively within the research team, and a proven capacity to work to and meet deadlines. It is required knowledge of and experience in one of:
1. •Natural Language Processing/Information extraction from text/Text processing,
2. •Machine learning
3. •Linked Data
The candidate must be a UK or EU citizen.
