CLARET Workshop: Spoken Corpus Analysis University of Nottingham 29 April 2010

This is the first in a series of three workshop events, hosted by the CLARET partnership: the Universities of Nottingham, Birmingham and Lancaster.

The 2010 Corpus Linguistics Advanced Research Education and Training (CLARET) programme is a national research training programme in Corpus Linguistics running in the UK. It is open to doctoral students whose work involves the investigation of large amounts of electronically-stored language data.

The Nottingham workshop is concerned with the analysis of spoken discourse in corpora. It explores ways in which new descriptions of discourse as they emerge from corpus analysis can contribute to our understanding of a variety of issues in applied linguistics.

The workshop introduces a range of areas that are of key importance in the analysis of speech in corpus analysis, including, amongst others, the collection and representation of language for spoken corpora, the analysis of functional elements in spoken corpora and the issue of multi-modality, the relationship between speech and writing, and the analysis of speech in fiction.

The workshop will consist of presentations, seminars and hands-on sessions. Participants will be given the opportunity to engage with a number of different spoken corpora hosted at the University of Nottingham.

The event will be held on Thursday, 29th April 2010, with registration at 10am. Lunch will be provided at 1pm and the workshop will finish at 4.30pm.
